They are designed to help students learn to write academic texts, teach their arguments and defend ideas. In 3-4 years of study, you need to have enough writing skills to write a bachelor’s thesis. Of course, experienced scriptwriters at our company have, for a long time in their work, been aware of how to write properly and can advise you on any aspect of the final thesis. Here are some tips to help you improve your writing skills:
Plan your time. Good writing is inseparable from time planning.
Plan what you write and how long it should take. You have clear time limits when writing your final thesis, so focus on how much time you have, and distribute it accordingly. Don’t miss the last week of writing your entire report. While some may say that they have the best ideas in the last few days, these people probably haven’t tried to start writing their work before. It is not in vain that the writing works are asked at the beginning of the semester: the lecturer knows that it takes a lot of time to do a good research and to set it up in writing. Gradually, the text is mature. By writing hastily you will not improve your writing skills.
Read the research done by others.
Look for inspiration or encouragement in the work of other scientists, try to use the accesses used by other authors. This will help you learn what good writing is – good examples inspire and “kick off”. Also, read the works of classics in your field of science and try to understand why they are classics, look at their value. Enhance your vocabulary by reading other texts.
Find your writing style. Academic text does not necessarily have to be dry, hard to read. Look for ways to make your material accessible and interesting to a wider audience, and try to convey your material in a form that is best for you. You can read publications that are relevant to your area of science. You’ll see how scientific topics are addressed to the general public. Such information will certainly be useful for writing and serious scientific texts.
Write a lot. Write down your ideas.
We often promise to write down a good thought or a strong sentence, but we will soon forget. Keep a notebook next to you so that you can drop off your thoughts right away. Try to describe your daily progress: write new discoveries in writing, try to systematize the collected material. Even if you have achieved little in the day, try to express it in words. This makes you write more and constantly improve yourself.
Look for synonyms. When writing text, try not to use the same words or phrases. It is not a great pleasure to read a text that is constantly repeating the same words, and the use of cliché formulations will certainly not add solidity to your work. So, for commonly used phrases, look for synonyms, alternative descriptions. This will enrich your vocabulary and will allow you to write more quickly and easily over time.
To avoid being misunderstood, write plain and clear. Specifically, tell us what you want to say without overwhelming the sentence with unnecessary words that have no purpose. Also avoid long sentences, overloaded with details and specific terms. Look for words that give your text life and color, not complicate and make it too complicated.
While abstracting and synthesizing information is really useful, you should avoid using too many common phrases that generalize and do not give any information. For example, such a sentence as: “In ancient times, people had more children than they are now,” is too general to really tell the reader something. The word “antiquity” is too vague, because everyone understands what is old in its own way: a historian exploring the 16th century. History of the 19th Century there are very modern times. The statement itself is also controversial because the number of children in the family depended on the social situation of the family and many other things. In addition, women were more likely to give birth, but not all children did. So did people really have more children in ancient times?
Don’t repeat. Avoid returning to the same ideas in different paragraphs. Try to concentrate all related thoughts and arguments in a single place. This will improve over time by organizing the text, entering information into one system. Your texts will be better organized and easier to read.
Give your text to someone else, such as your colleague. Another person’s eyes will immediately see the shortcomings of the text that you do not already notice. In addition, another reader will objectively evaluate your writing, perhaps giving you advice. Only through constant advice and remarks can you really improve your writing.
Edit your own text yourself.
If you are unsure about the spelling or sentence punctuation rules of the word, check the electronic or paper dictionaries, grammar rules sets. It is very important for you to develop your writing skills to do it yourself. In the long run, you only need to check one rule, and the texts will “touch” smoothly and grammatically.
